SANSA bids farewell to Earth Observation Head

The Managing Director for the SANSA Earth Observation programme, Dr Jane Olwoch will be taking her leave of the Agency at the end of January 2017. She has been leading the programme since  its establishment in 2011 and made a valuable contribution to the development and appreciation of Earth observation during her tenure.

She has ensured the delivery of extensive services to both private and public sector and contributed her leadership in many international forums on behalf of SANSA.

Dr Olwoch leaves SANSA to pursue further growth opportunities and we are grateful to her for her contribution to the field of Earth Observation and wish her a bright future in her new endeavour.

New head at helm of Space Agency

Dr Valanathan Munsami has been appointed as a successor to Dr Sandile Malinga, as the new CEO for the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) effective from 3 January 2017.

Dr Malinga left the Agency in August 2016 following five years as inaugural CEO and Board member, Mr Potlaki Maine was appointed as interim CEO to manage the agency during the appointment process of a permanent CEO. The Agency appreciates the efforts of both Dr Malinga and Mr Maine for their valuable leadership of this young organisation.

Dr Munsami takes the helm following an impactful past in shaping South Africa's space science landscape. He has held a number of positions within the Department of Science and Technology, with the latest position held being the Chief Science and Technology Representative of the Department of Science and Technology since February 2016.

SANSA intensifies processing and dissemination of Biophysical Parameters from Sentinel-2

Sample imagesResponding to the increased user demand of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) and other important biophysical parameters from the recently launched Sentinel-2 satellite, SANSA has intensified its processing of Sentinel-2 data to meet these user demands. SANSA is confident that this work will contribute to the Global Climate Observing System's ECVs that are required to monitor current and historical environmental and climate linked phenomena.

SANSA welcomes interim CEO










(LtoR) Mr Potlaki Maine, Ms Joy-Marie Lawrence (Baord Chairman) and Dr Sandile Malinga

On 1 September, SANSA welcomed Mr Potlaki Maine as Acting Chief Executive Officer following the resignation of former CEO, Dr Sandile Malinga.

Dr Malinga has been with the Agency since inception and developed the strong foundation for SANSA to fulfil its mandate. He has left after six successful years establishing SANSA to take up the role of COO at ATNS.

Mr Maine is a seasoned IT professional and campaigner who has held a number of senior roles in the public and private sector, including being appointed as a founding Board Member of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) in 2010 and further reappointed in 2014.
