The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) was established in 2010. Following a period of rapid growth and transition the agency has made significant advancements towards addressing its mandate of deriving greater value from space science and technology for the benefit of South African society.

Titled: EO spectrometer helps to identify relevant bands for early detection of famine weed.

A recently purchased Spectral Evolution field spectrometer by Earth Observation directorate was put to task in a quest to identify relevant spectral bands for early detection of a harmful invasive alien plant commonly known as famine weed.

This instrument was used in the field to capture reflectance from famine weed and other different plant types occurring in the same area. To the naked eye (or visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum), these plant species look similar due to their green coloured leaves and can only be differentiated based on their structure at a closer look. But such exercise would be time consuming, costly and tedious. On the other hand, field spectrometer allow for identification of different plant types based on their unique absorption and reflection intensities in different parts (or bands) of the electromagnetic spectrum.

SA delegates at the BRICS meeting in China

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA), the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), the State Space Corporation "Roscosmos" (ROSCOSMOS), the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the China National Space Administration (CNSA) have today formally joined forces to create the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation.

A Joint Committee Meeting was held in Haikou, China, on 3 July 2017 to review and deliberate on the progress of the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation and to discuss a Draft Agreement to be signed later this year. It was stressed that the BRICS Satellite Constellation is the first substantive project in the field of space cooperation.
